Retrofit Smart Controllers

App Control Without a New Opener

If your opener works fine mechanically and you simply want to know whether the door is open, you almost certainly do not need a new opener.

A retrofit controller wires into the existing unit and adds connectivity: app control, live status, and alerts. The motor, rail and safety systems stay exactly as they are.

What You Get

Status. Open or closed, visible from anywhere.

Alerts. A notification when the door opens, or when it has been left open longer than a period you set. This is the feature that changes behaviour.

Remote operation. Open or close from the app.

History. A log of when it opened and closed, which is more useful than it sounds in a household with several drivers.

Will It Work on My Opener?

Most units made in the last couple of decades, yes. The controller needs to trigger the opener the way a wall button does, and to sense the door position with a tilt or contact sensor.

Very old openers are the exception, and there for two reasons we would suggest replacement instead: anything predating 1993 has no photo eyes at all, and fixed-code units send a repeatable signal that can be captured and replayed.

Tell us the make and rough age on the phone and we can usually answer before visiting.

The Wi-Fi Question

This is where most retrofits go wrong, and it is not the controller’s fault.

A garage is often the furthest point in the house from the router, frequently through masonry, sometimes in a detached building. Signal there is marginal, and a marginal connection produces exactly the symptoms people blame on the hardware: dropping offline, slow status updates, commands that do not arrive.

We check signal at the opener before fitting anything. If it is weak, an access point or mesh node near the garage is the fix, and it is better to know that first.

What We Test Afterwards

Both safety reversals, always. An app that can close a door you cannot see makes the photo eyes and the contact reversal more important, not less.

We also set up the alert rules with you, because notifications that fire constantly get muted within a week and then the feature is worth nothing.
